Is a Wearable Breast Pump Safe?

It is a completely reasonable question. When a product is new to a market, when it involves something as significant as feeding a newborn and when the technology looks different from what came before, skepticism is appropriate. What "safe" means in this context

When mothers ask whether a wearable breast pump is safe, they are usually asking one of several related questions:

Is the milk safe?

The safety of expressed breast milk depends on two things: the materials that milk contacts during expression and the hygiene practices applied to the equipment.

Materials: All milk-contact parts of the Solyymoms Air 1 - the flange, collection cup, valve and diaphragm are made from BPA-free, phthalate-free medical-grade silicone and food-grade plastic. BPA (bisphenol A) is a chemical used in some plastics that has raised health concerns, particularly for infants. Phthalates are plasticisers with similar concerns. Both are absent from the Solyymoms Air 1 components that contact milk.

Will it harm breast tissue?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions, often connected to concerns about whether pumping causes breast sagging a separate myth we have addressed in detail elsewhere.

The specific concern about wearable pumps is sometimes about the suction mechanism, whether a pump that creates suction from within a bra rather than from an external motor causes different tissue effects.

The answer is no. The suction mechanism of a wearable pump operates on the same principle as any other electric breast pump, negative pressure applied to the nipple and areola draws milk from the ducts. The source of the negative pressure (an internal motor versus an external motor connected by tubes) does not change what happens at the breast surface.
